Dont you just love Paul Simon? The lyrics to his songs are not only pleasing to the ears, but can be inspirational. Imagine yourself enjoying the warm autumn sunlight while listening to Paul’s song, 50 Ways to Leave your Lover. Now, stretch your imagination just a bit and think about how many “Ways” you can come up with for saving and/or making more money in business…

The problem is all inside your head
She said to me
The answer is easy
If you take it logically

So, lets look at the problem logically for a minute. Here are four basic ways you can increase your profits:

1. You can charge more for your products or services.
2. You can sell more of your products or services to your existing clients.
3. You can find additional clients.
4. You can find ways to cut back on your business expenses.

“Slip Out the Back, Jack” (Simple ways to save money):

So, if youre on a shoestring budget (and who isnt these days?), then obviously you need to do everything you can to save as much money as possible, and make as much money as possible, as quickly and easily as possible. Here are 10 simple ideas you can use:

1. Know your target market. Who are your ideal customers?
Where do they shop? What do they read? What solutions are they looking for that your business provides? The more you know about your customers, the better youll be able to target your promotions towards them, which will increase your bottom line two ways it will save you spending money on advertising that doesn’t work, and it will increase your sales, because youre offering your customers what they really want.

2. Get double duty out of any contact with your customers. If you sell products, put your contact information on everything products, bags, invoices sales receipts. Make it easy for everyone to find you. Give away something free. If you have a Website (and if you dont, then get one), give your customers something for giving you their contact information. Free Ebooks, reports, or software are all good choices (just make sure it’s relevant to your customers). Anytime you send your customers anything a product, a newsletter, an invoice include a coupon or information about your latest products or services. To save money on postage, if you have a brick and mortar store, put a copy of your latest newsletter or an informational flyer in your customers bag after each sale.

3. Reward your customers. Set up a reward program. Offer them a reward for anyone they refer who becomes a customer. Or give your customers a free gift when they spend $50 (or whatever amount makes sense in your business). When they are eligible for the free gift, offer them an upgrade to something bigger or better for a few dollars more. Start a customer loyalty program. Provide “customer only” sales, or promotions. Let your customers earn points, or “magic money that they can use to redeem your products or services.

4. Get ready for your close-up. When youre brainstorming about creating a promotion or advertising campaign, dont forget about your local cable TV channel. You may be pleasantly surprised by how low their rates actually are. Create your own television commercial or infomercial. Although you may not be ready for prime time, you can still target your ad to reach your customers.

5. Get involved in your community. Find a nonprofit organization that is doing work you believe in, and either publicly support their program, or be one of their sponsors for an upcoming event or fundraiser. Use the advertising spot to let people know about the fundraiser (and, incidentally, your business). You could put together an inexpensive ad campaign that will help those in need, increase your visibility and let your potential customers know that you’re supportive and aware of the needs of the community.

Make a new plan, Stan (Business Planning Basics):

6. Beef up your business plan. If you dont have a business plan, make writing one a priority. Your business plan is more than just a way to interest investors. Its a road map that will help you get from where you are now to where you want to be. That old saying, “If you fail to plan then you’re planning to fail really is true when it comes to business.

“No need to be coy, Roy” (Ask your customers):

7. Get testimonials from your satisfied clients. But dont stop there. What about creating your own television commercial that you can run in your store? (With a video camera and a little ingenuity, you could even create your own infomercial that shows customers how to use or get the most out of your products or services. If youve got a Website, put an audio testimonial on there. (And dont forget to include pictures).

8. Speak up. Again, keeping in mind who your ultimate ideal customers are and what their most pressing problems are, write an article, offer a free seminar, or offer to be a speaker at local chamber of commerce or other organization or community meetings. Being perceived as an expert is a relatively easy and inexpensive way to get the word out about your business, and bring in more customers.

“Just hop on the bus, Gus” (Expand your business potential)

9. Create joint ventures. Even if your primary business is a brick and mortar one, you can still create a joint venture that will help you save money by sharing the costs for advertising. What about creating a special “sidewalk sale with other business owners on your street or in your neighborhood? Or finding businesses with complementary products or services to yours, and creating a package deal If your business is only online, look for ways you can partner with other businesses – maybe you could create solo ads and promote each others products or services in your mailing lists. There are a lot of ways you can save money and increase your client base if youre willing to get creative.

“Just drop off the key, Lee” (Provide the key solutions)

10. Let your customers know you know what their problems are. It’s sad but true that your customers don’t care how good your products or services are. They only want to know two things: do you understand what their problems are; and can you solve them. Give your customers the “key” to their problems, and you’ll have evangelistic customers who come back again and again.

I Have My Manuscript, Now What? A Look at the World of Publishing

Youve spent endless nights hammering away at your book. Youve rewritten it, youve edited it, and you had it professionally proofed. Your baby is finally done and youre ready to send your precious manuscript off to a publisher, thinking that writing it was the hardest part. Wrong!

Actually, getting your blood, sweat and tears published may be the hardest part of the whole process. Youll need to determine if a publisher will be required, or if youd rather self-publish your book. There are pros and cons to both sides, some of which are discussed below.

To work with a publisher, youll need to send out query letters and/or a book proposal. This is a letter or a few pages briefly describing your text, why it is unique, characteristics of your target market and how you can help market the book. Most publishers dont accept unsolicited manuscripts, so youll need to convince them to read yours. If they request that you forward your entire manuscript, you have one foot in the door. Be prepared to send more than one query and dont expect a response next week.

There are writer’s guides that serve as excellent resources to find publishers who specialize in your particular genre. These guides list the percentage of new authors published as well as the percentage of sales they pay. You may find pay rates ranging from 5-10% of sales. Some pay on wholesale sales and others on the retail amount. Do the math. Perhaps your book will retail for $14.95 and the publisher will pay 6% on retail. This means you will earn 90 cents per book sold. Of course dont forget that the publisher is doing all the printing, distributing, and marketing of your text.

Another route you may want to consider is self-publishing. You will be responsible for all the printing, distributing and marketing costs involved, but you will also get to retain all the profits. There are book printing companies as well as companies that specialize in assisting the self-publisher through every step along the way.

Finally, theres age old debate about which method is better; using a publishing company or self publishing your own book. You know your situation and you know what will work best for you. Youll want to consider how much time or money you have to invest in the project. That should give you an idea which route to take. Using a publisher takes less time on your part, but youll forfeit some of the royalties by using this method. If you self publish, youll have to pay “up front” and do the initial work to get the ball rolling on sales of your book.

Either way, publishing is your call. With a little persistance and hard work you CAN get your book to Market. So, go for it!!

In the mortgage business there are two foundational areas of involvement. One is the position of “loan officer,” the other is working as a “broker.” The loan officer for the most part earns from what is called “personal production,” which means you are earning from what you are able to personally produce by bringing mortgage business into your employer’s office. In some cases you may be paid a base salary and/or draw, but then you will be paid less in commissions by the company (broker) you are working for.

The second - and most potentially lucrative for you - area of involvement is the broker. Most people start out in the mortgage business by working as a loan officer, gaining experience and expertise, and later they consider opening their own shop by becoming a broker. This can be frustrating for the broker who is training loan officers, because they are continually losing their best loan officers and creating their own future competition.

The broker hires, spoon feeds and trains their loan officers and pays them a commission out of the profits they receive from the lenders with whom they work. As the loan officer begins to learn the business they obviously start thinking about leveraging themselves through the efforts of others so that they can earn from the production of others as the broker does.

~ The mortgage business is currently experiencing re-definition by new leaders in the industry who are breaking old traditional earning models. ~

Within the last few years new leaders in the mortgage industry have been breaking the old traditional earning models, and have created revolutionary new approaches which allow just about anyone to build a business in the mortgage industry with very little knowledge or experience. Beginners are now able to make more money - in less time - with less effort!

In the past you would have started out as a loan officer - generally with a bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, or a related field, and earned $30,000 to $50,000 a year. You then worked locally where the broker who hired you was licensed to do business. For the most part your income level would have been limited until you gained enough experience to open your own shop.

The downside of this was that even when you advanced to becoming a broker yourself, you also took on the financial liability of running a business. Opening a local mortgage brokerage can often be very costly, along with the many additional liabilities that go along with hiring, training and running payroll.

New approaches to the mortgage business now allow you to build a mortgage business of your own where you call the shots and your income is not solely dependent on your own personal production.

Here are just a few of the new advantages…

* You can now earn on mortgage business on a national level. These new business models now allow you to operate under a “branch license” so you can do business just about anywhere.

* You have the ability to immediately leverage yourself. You can earn commission overrides just like a traditional Mortgage broker can. This means that you can build a national team throughout the United States and earn from their activity.

* No major investment - Instead of investing thousands of dollars in franchise fees you can get started typically for around $200.

* You are able to tap into proven business models that will help you teach and train your unexperienced loan officer recruits.

How much money can you make?

Let’s compare the traditional model of earning only from your personal production with the model of introducing this concept to others and being able to leverage yourself:

The following will give you an example of what you would earn If you based your earning level on personal production at three different commission earning levels. The following are based on a hypothetical $200,000 mortgage.

One House per month Commission paid out
30% $1,050.00 Earned
64% $2.240.00 Earned
70% $2,660.00 Earned

Two Houses per month
30% $2,100.00 Earned
64% $4,480.00 Earned
70% $5,320.00 Earned

Let’s look at this a different way that shows the power of leverage where you are not depending entirely on your own personal production. The following example assumes that you are earning 64% from two personal loans a month and are earning from the personal production of five others who are doing just one loan each per month.

Personal Production 64% Earning Level
Your personal earnings - $4,480.00
Loans From 5 Others Who Are At The 30% Level
Your earnings from their production - $5,950.00

Total Earnings For Month - $10,430.00

As you can see, it really is to your advantage to immediately involve others in the business. Your personal efforts along with the combined efforts of others can really produce some exciting numbers, in this example over $125,000 a year in income! The exciting thing about this is that you are not limited to just five people, you have the ability to grow a very large income very quickly.

Positive Points

1) You don’t have to wait until you’re experienced, you can start right away.

2) You are not limited to earning from the efforts of just five people, your earnings can come from as many personal recruits that join your business.

3) You can earn from the personal efforts of those you recruit as well as the people they themselves introduce to the mortgage business!

4) Your earnings can be generated from other team members throughout the United States representing every conceivable city you can think of or have never heard of.

Am I beginning to get your attention yet?

By now your mind might be flooded with additional questions. One prevailing question might be…

“There are already many people in the Mortgage business, how can we compete?”

To be perfectly honest, many people who are approaching the mortgage business with old worn out models are finding it difficult to survive, while companies and individuals who are embracing these revolutionary new concepts are exploding in growth.

In the USA, the housing market has been booming, but now it is leveling out or even shrinking in many areas. Most of those homeowners would love to save on their mortgages now, and their need is likely to increase if the market keeps going down. There are some very creative mortgage services available online, with some research you can make a very good offer to your customers.

If you want a real, tangible business that you can run from home, using the Internet, this is a good one to consider. Spend some time searching the web and reading up on this and I think you will find the information you need, and some good groups who will be happy to help you launch yourself into this business.

It’s a win/win. You will be helping others at the same time that you build a long-term income and a business to be proud of, for yourself.

Most of us believe parts of life are inherently stressful. In fact, most of us have been taught to believe that life as a whole is very stressful. To deal with any type of stress effectively, you must first understand that life itself is NOT inherently stressful. Thousands of human beings have learned how to speak in front of groups with little or no stress at all. Many of these people were initially terrified to speak in public.

Their knees would shake, their voices would tremble, their thoughts would become jumbled - you know the rest. Yet they learned to eliminate their fear of public speaking completely. You are no more or less human than they are. If they can conquer the fear of public speaking, so can you. It just takes the right guiding principles, the right understanding and the right plan of action to make this goal a reality.

You are no more or less human than they are. If they can conquer the fear of public speaking, so can you. It just takes the right guiding principles, the right understanding and the right plan of action to make this goal a reality.

Many of us have observed public speakers and thought to ourselves, “Wow, I could never be that smart, calm, witty, entertaining, polished - or whatever.” Well, I’ve got news for you - you don’t have to be brilliant or perfect to succeed. That is not what public speaking is all about. You can make mistakes, get tongue tied or even forget whole parts of your speech and still be successful.

It all depends on how you and your audience define “success”. One of the biggest secrets to successful public speaking is understanding that your audience does NOT expect perfection. The essence of public speaking is to give your audience something of value. That’s all there is to it. If they walk away feeling better about themselves, feeling happy, they will consider their time with you worthwhile.

You don’t have to deliver mountains of facts or details to give your audience what they truly want. Many studies have shown that people remember very few of the facts or information that speakers convey. Remember, all your audience wants from you is to walk away with one or two key points that will make a difference to them.

While it may seem paradoxical, the best way to succeed as a public speaker is not to consider yourself a public speaker at all. Just go out there armed with a little knowledge and a few main points and be yourself. That’s all there is to it. Of course you may need to practice. Just keep throwing yourself into the arena, and in no time at all your confidence will come to the surface.

A recent survey showed that more than eighty percent of Americans want to write a book. This extraordinary statistic is somewhat puzzling considering that the National Endowment for the Arts estimates that only fifty-seven percent of Americans have read even 1 book in the last twelve months!

What is it that makes people — even non-readers — want to put pen to paper?

Perhaps it’s the desire for fame and fortune, the need to earn the respect of others, or maybe it’s just the wish to leave some mark on the future, a permanent record of a life lived.

Whatever the reason, for those who actually complete a manuscript, the odds of seeing it published by a reputable firm are slim.

For the estimated 2 million manuscripts currently completed, there are only 64,000 publishers of record, and only a fraction of those are actively seeking new manuscripts.

So what are the millions of hopeful authors to do?

Well, the first step would be to ensure their manuscripts are the best they can be. This can be done by re-writing, editing, proofreading by an outside firm or even by a well-read and literate friend.

Even then, most of those two million books stand no chance of being accepted by a traditional publisher. Those authors that do make the cut are not necessarily the best writers, but rather are those who can sell themselves and their stories most convincingly.

Some authors, after rejections from the trade, will find themselves victims of vanity publishers, who take advantage of the hopes and aspirations of writers to extract an exorbitant fee to ‘publish’ their book.

Luckier will be the writers who publish through firms like iUniverse and Lulu, for although their books will likely never see wide distribution, at least their losses will be minimal.

And finally there are the select few who decide to become publishers themselves, even if it is only to self-publish their own book.

These publishers will find great obstacles, and a great deal of work in this route, but the challenge and reward of having one’s success or failure entirely in one’s own hands is a powerful feeling.

Whether they choose to publish electronically, or use short run printing service like Lightning Print, or even to go full boar with a print run of 1,000 or more, their success depends on how well they sell themselves and their story to others.

And so, if you are about to embark on a new manuscript, educate yourself thoroughly about the industry, its scams, and potential pitfalls. And more importantly, learn to market yourself well, for this, more than any other skill, is the determining factor in your success or failure.

Are you trying to start an online business? Are you overwhelmed with the many online business programs available or concerned that you’ll lose money by investing in them? While many offers sound too good to be true, there are some very good ones available - but how can you be sure? Learning to read ‘between the lines’ will better prepare you for what’s really involved.

Here are some common phrases used to promote online businesses and what they really mean:

#1 - Simple & Easy

Simple and easy depends on who’s speaking. A doctor may tell you it’s only a ’simple procedure’ but that doesn’t mean that you should attempt it yourself.

Many online businesses ARE simple to operate. If you understand how it works you will be amazed at the simplicity - but getting to that point will require time and experience. You may just need to try a few to get a ‘feel’ for the business before deciding which one is easiest for you.

Those who have learned from experience can look back and see how simple it COULD have been if they’d known what to do all along. Finding a trustworthy guide can be a great assistance to your business efforts.

#2 - Anyone Can Do This

Sorry - starting a business of any kind is stressful and requires a learning curve. If you are attempting an online business out of desperation or the belief you will make easy money you will face enormous obstacles. On the other hand, if you are truly seeking a business you can learn, work at and make a living from, you will find something online that fits your needs.

Studies of successful business people concur that those who make it have common qualities of persistence, patience and desire. These qualities are essential when trying to start an online business - do you have them?

#3 - Turnkey

The term ‘turnkey’ use to mean that a business was set up and ready to go. You will find the term in business classifieds where the new owner can just step in and start running the business. Unfortunately some marketers use the term to suggest a business is fully automated - that there is no work involved.

There is always work involved. If the business really is turnkey than you will begin work right away because it has already been set to go. If you want an automated business you will have to do the work to make it automated. Either way, nobody is going to give you an automated, turnkey business that makes money - they had to do the work, so why would they share it?

#4 - It Won’t Cost Anything

You absolutely CAN set up an online business with no money, but be prepared that a combination of no money and lack of experience will stifle your efforts immensely.

Most individuals who start or run a business with no money have learned how to make use of the best free techniques through experience. They have paid their dues by trying businesses that cost money. They have spent time in and around their industry or market and they’ve been able to see where they can cut costs.

If you are prepared to spend a LOT of time researching before starting your business you may be one of the few who does it right the first time. For most people though, expect to pay something towards your online business education before seeing results - you just can’t buy experience.

Online business obviously has its share of work involved, but finding the right one has enormous payoffs many people are willing to sacrifice time and money to achieve. Running your own business is satisfying and can give you more time to do what you really want to do in life.

Creating a successful online business is within the grasp of nearly everyone who is prepared to stick to it. Face the task of starting your business with realistic expectations while continuing to dream big and you may just surprise yourself!

The success of any store that sells products or services relies heavily on traffic. Whether walk-in, telephone, or web site visitors, each person that in some way contacts you has a value to your business. Yes, even the problem people, the random visitors, and the tag-along husbands have a value.

Being aware of how much each person is worth in dollars is extremely important. This will help you maximize your income while minimizing your marketing expenses.

Most business owners do not take the time to determine the value of each visitor. Why? Because business owners may be experts in furniture, hardware, plumbing, or teeth, but they hate the paperwork side of business ownership.

Let us take a look at a quick and easy way to assign a dollar value to each person who calls or visits your business. And how it can increase your income this year, as it has for so many others.

Very simply, take the total sales each week. Divide it by the number of people that visited and called you. This assigned value will become more accurate and more important each week. You add this week’s visitors to all previous visitors, and this week’s sales to all previous sales.

If you have a walk-in business, such as a furniture store, put a traffic counter on the door. If your door is used for both entry and exit, divide results by two to avoid counting the same people twice.

Keep track of the phone calls too. Have a pad by the phone to record the name and phone number of each caller. This is just good business sense. You, no doubt, are doing this already.

Now, for example, let us say that for the month of May you had 3000 walk-ins and 500 phone calls. Add these together for a total of 3500 visitors. Your sales for the month was $33,000. Divide $33,000 by 3500. You have now established that each visitor is worth $9.43 in gross sales.

Now you have an accurate way to measure your in-store marketing strategies. You can quickly see the results in the rise or fall of the “per person” value in sales. These tactics might include how you arrange your merchandise. Also, suggesting additional items that will complement the visitor’s purchase. Also, setting up specific displays with colorful signs or banners tied in with special or seasonal themes.

Be creative. Scout out your competition and similar stores in other towns. Here are a couple proven strategies that are very effective.

Hamburger stores have found that offering a “super-size” package dramatically increases the per person value. They have found that it is much easier to get additional money out of people who are already committed to spending money with you than to sell a new customer.

One grocery store, when setting up an Italian dinner display, will include all the accessories in the display. Wine from the liquor department, French bread from their bakery, and Parmesan cheese from the dairy department. The customers love it and it dramatically increases sales.

Ok - you have optimized your in-store marketing. Now you can look at buying more traffic with external marketing - such as media advertising.

But, before you spend a penny, you need to take the “per person” value one step further. You need to establish the per person gross profit.

The average percentage of profit needed to stay alive may vary from 200% for a jewelry store to 2% for a grocery store. Most stores and service businesses average around a 40% margin. We will use 40% for this scenario.

Let us say you have increased the per person value to $14.90 gross sales by fine-tuning your in-store marketing. Your margin of profit is 40%, so each person is worth $5.96 in gross profit. Now you know for sure you cannot spend more than $5.96 per person to profitably bring them into your store.

For example, you spend $1000 on a TV advertising campaign. It increases traffic by 200 people. You have spent $5.00 per visitor. The advertising paid for itself, but barely shows a profit. Your next marketing effort may be a $1000 newspaper program. It brings in additional 300 visitors. You paid only $3.33 per visitor. This would be quite profitable. Obviously, this is one marketing plan that you will want to repeat over and over again.

Additionally, knowing the value of each person in gross profit will help you eliminate expensive junk marketing. Junk marketing includes advertising on phone book covers, posters, maps, and the like. In fact, yellow pages are quickly becoming a poor investment.

For example, a salesperson asks you to put an ad on a fishing contest poster. Quite likely, it may only bring in one or two visitors, if any. You wisely determine that the most you can spend on this would then be about $12. Anything more should be considered a donation, not a marketing investment.

Numbers not your cup of tea? Follow the example of Henry Ford. Do only what you do best, and wisely hire out the rest. Train and empower a family member or fellow employee to become essentially involved in the success of your business. They can take care of tracking the numbers and you can do the brain work.

Establishing a value for each visitor is simple. It is essential. It is powerful. It puts you in total control, no matter what the economic cycles throw your way. It gives you a way to measure the value in dollars of every new marketing idea you implement.

Freelancing – 21st Century Way of Making a Living

When you think of freelancing, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? You probably think of a writer, novelist or journalist right off hand.

That is primarily because for centuries, the only real job you could have as a freelancer had to do with your mastery of the written word.

But we are not still stuck back in the early nineteen hundreds – no we are in the twenty first century, a time that appreciates freelancers in hundreds of different jobs.

Sure, you have probably heard of freelance photographers too, you may have even met one or two in your life, but what about freelance software designers, freelance medical billing specialists, or even freelance scientific researchers?

There are all jobs that have recently begun to see massive growth in their respective fields because more and more people are realizing that they can make far more money working for themselves as freelancers than they ever could solely from working under the wing of their previous employer.

So it sounds pretty good doesn’t it? You work in some field for quite a few years, get a lot of practical experience in your chosen area of employment and then gradually make the switch from working the nine to five to becoming your own boss as a freelancer.

But is it really as easy as it sounds to become a freelancer and actually make a living doing work on a freelance basis?

We have to keep in mind that there are quite a few freelancers out there who are only doing work part time.

Not because they make a ton of money and only have to work a couple of days per week but because they actually have had some trouble finding work in the past and need a much more solid career option in order to make sure that they do not find themselves facing bankruptcy.

However, such a scenario does not have to happen to you if you are willing to do whatever it takes to become a freelancer. Your career switch may not happen overnight – but eventually you will become highly successful at what you do.

Success on the Internet

There are at least 3 important steps to a successful plan when working on the internet. These 3 steps can be applied to just about any plan, and when coupled with the right amount of determination and perseverance, will result in success! But remember, you must persevere through the dry spells and difficult times. Everyone has hard times and this is just a fact of life. The key is to keep working toward your goal and never give up.

Three Important Steps

1) Develop the Right Philosophy

The first point is to develop the right philosophy. How you approach your business (and life) will determine your success or failure. Try to always be growing and expanding your horizons in some way. You might want to think about continuing your education or contributing to your local community in some way. (Make sure to set-aside enough money for personal development.)

Most successful people do not blindly follow someone else. They learn, evaluate, and make the necessary adjustments in their approach to career and life. Excellence is the goal, and continuous training and instruction are a very important part of the process.

As you continue to grow and develop, be sure to find other individuals who can help in the process. Good mentors are hard to come by, but indispensible when it comes to personal growth.

2) Decide What You ‘Really’ Want

Determine your true inner desire and then do it! If you don’t really desire to accomplish what it is you are currently doing, when the difficult times arrive you will simply quit. It’s a fact of life! Thousands of dollars are lost by people who invest in ill-suited programs which they soon quit. The inner desire and “real” interest were not there in the first place.

Always remember…to be successful you must first determine your true inner desire. Identify what it is that you really want in your career and life. The answers to these questions will lead you to success.

3) Take Action

Do your homework, but by all means step out and do something. Not just anything, mind you…you can actually be busy and not accomplish anything.

Consistent action in the right direction will produce results. It is the law of sowing and reaping. You reap what you sow. In other words, you get what you deserve, not what you need. Plant enough seeds and you will find growth. Ask enough people and someone will join or buy what you are offering.
